Important message for Women to teach our Daughters

Sheryl Sandburg is the COO of Facebook. This is the part of a speech she gave at the TED conference, about women in the workforce. It's an important message for all of us to think about whether we are in the workforce, or if we are at home raising the future workforce.

From Baby to Mama . . .

So More-Stylish-Sister has a nursery in her house that she is in the
process of converting over to a room for herself.
She doesn't need any help decorating her beautiful home -
But what kind of sister would I be if I didn't barge my nose in to her bizness.

All of us sisters are huge Mary McDonald fans.
Lish posted this previously and I'm going to use it as a jumping off point.
I'm imagining the room as a sanctuary and a mix between dressing room/office.
She can fill it with all her favorite things

The room is small and currently in a neutral cream color.
I would add pops of color and texture.

I'd copy that wall of photos with
Mark Shaw vintage fashion prints to do up the one wall in the room.
Here are some of my favorites:
The first couple are shot in 1954 backstage at a Pierre Balmain fashion show.

These I love for the pops of color.

And these I just love.

I'd put a big wing chair on casters too.
This would be the only chair in the room.
Strange I know but this room is just hers to relax and unwind.
No need for visitors.

The chair could then be pulled up to the desk on the wall beneath the window
but also kept in a cozy corner to sit and read.

I heart this table.
But I'd take some of the stuff off of it.
I'd put it in the corner next to the chair.

Windsor Smith used one of the prints in her entrance.

I'd mimic this idea with a table below all our Mark Shaw photos.
On it I would have small mirrored trays with jewelry
and maybe some of her fabulous bags.

I'd put one huge chandelier in the room as well.
I adore this.
More substantial than girly.

For her birthday this year her girlfriends threw her a brunch.
The table was set with shoes and flowers.
I'd do that on the bookshelves with her photos.

From here I would tell her to sit back and relax.
Maybe give a call to Tizzy or Lish.

Turn it out . . .

Has anyone else seen this?

Can you imagine this being your family Christmas card?
I'm just trying to imagine how we would sell this to Husband.
Ah yeah, so my mom wants you to put on a pin-striped suit and look fierce for the Christmas card.

And yes, they are looking fierce.
The baby absolutely kills me.
He should be the whole card.

But wait I have more.

Last years is nice and so normal.
There was a family wedding and everyone's arms around each other.
(except Kim who is still posing)
Minus Ryan Seacrest.
Don't know why he's in it.

2008
Selling it hard again.
They had to have had a tv show at this point, right?
Poor Rob.
I mean we know the girls love to dress up.

But this is by far the piece-de-resistance.
They've always worked this hard for it.
The leather, the back drop, the awesomeness.

The whole family needs the t-shirt I just saw at Target.
Proud to be Awesome.

A couple reasons not to be sooooo blue

Couldn't you just sleep, lounge, day dream, snuggle, and maybe get some sexy time in this blue heaven of a bedroom.

Could you D-I-E for this bathroom. The mix of modern and preppy. Hello gingham banquette in a bathroom...What....BRILLIANT

I mean if you have to be a boring accountant (like me) isn't this the only place you would want to do it in. Oh and I can tell it's an accountants office because of the container full of pencils on the white table inbetween the wingback chairs, duh!

Maybe I'm a little obsessed . . .

Loving all yellow dresses.
Thank you, Ms. Stefani.

Scientifically a novel idea, but will this really be the future?

“Carl Djerassi, one of the inventors of the Pill (before he became a Stanford professor, playwright, and sci-fi novelist), has suggested that all forms of birth control will eventually become obsolete and the Pill “will end up in a museum.” In his imaginings, girls and boys will deposit their eggs and sperm in a reproductive bank to be frozen at 20 or so and then get sterilized. They’ll want to do this because genetic diagnoses of embryos will become increasingly sophisticated, and no one will want to risk having a child with birth defects, let alone a child of an unpreferred gender or one predisposed to a hairy back. When these people want to have children, either one or six, at 30 or 60 years old, they’ll make a withdrawal from the bank.”

Really is this how our grandchildren are going to think about having children? I think it seems sad. I am all for science, and fertility treatments, and the use of science to improve our life and health. The idea that people in the future are going to sterilize themselves at 20, and then pick the most perfect of their embryos to have the most perfect of children with the gender they want, is just so sad and unnatural to me.

This seems to somewhat link more to the idea of "having it all", that we are all supposed to buy into. I'm sorry I don't buy into that idea, and I think we should all put it to the wayside. It's not easy to "have it all", and I guarantee that the people you talk to who supposedly "have it all" don't think they do. Life is really hard. The idea that in the future one way we are going to have it easier to have it all is to only have genetically perfect children, I don't like it.

Happy No More

I used to refer to the store's Marshall's and TJ Maxx as my happy place. I, over the years have gotten dozens if not hundreds of great low priced/discounted items there. Plus there are so many different options, from home decor, to workout clothes, baby gifts, under garments, as well as plain old clothes and accessories. But in the last year, it has been not so happy there. The selection has been bad, the quality and number of "label" items are way down, and basically I am not so happy when I am there.

But no fear folks I have a brand new happy place. It is not as all encompassing as Marshalls/TJ Maxx but man if you haven't been run don't walk to Anne Taylor Loft. They have seriously cute clothes and accessories!!! Like seriously, it's good quality, it's cute, it's relatively inexpensive, they have great sales. I swear I have never walked out the door without being amazed at what my bill added up to because something or another was on sale and I hadn't even realized it. But really the biggest stamp of approval is that every time I wear something from there I get compliments on that item. If that isn't a seal of approval I don't know what is.

I like it a lot. . .

Now that's some Christmas Spirit!
Huge holla out to Tobi Fairley for this delectable treat.
She knows how to put the fun in funky monkey.
Let us all bow our heads and pray.

It's that time of year again . . .

My very generous mother-in-law has struck with the holiday themed gifts again.
Our bathroom was rather sad sans santa towel.
Phew, arrived in the Nick of Time.
(Get it?!?)

Still can't beat my favorite.
But there's no Christmas funk (or gunk) the Santa towel can't help!

Really?

Would you rock this?
Moncler - love the jackets and coats.
The puffer dresss not so much.
Oh yeah and this little ensemble is $560.

So unexpected . . .

Look how fierce and sweet Gwen Stefani looks at the Kennedy Center Honors.
Could not love her in this dress more.

No Matter What Your Political Alliances This is A Good Step

Obama wrote it for his daughters and it features role models from all races, creeds, and time periods across American history. The illustrations are beautiful and as if that wasn’t enough, all proceeds from the book will go to a scholarship fund for children of wounded or fallen U.S. military personnel.

We need to stop polarizing each other by, race, gender, sexual orientation, lineage, weight, height, and whatever other stupid reason we think we are superior from people we don't even know. I think this book is great because of it's charity and it's message. Now if we could just get rid of don't ask don't tell.....

My horoscope for today!!!

So you might all be sick of randomly reading horoscopes of mine every now and then. I mean I get it. It's not your horoscope what do you care. But I think today's is good, cause I am single and unemployed. And it has good news on both those fronts.

The Chariot, in conjunction with the World, carries your social life along at top speed today. There'll be lots of socializing in store, notably with people you haven't met before. Caught up in the whirlwind of your life, you're in danger of getting carried away and falling for someone, passionately but unwisely, at first sight. Don't forget, Lish, that passion is best taken in small doses.Professionally, your self-confidence is restored, which enables you to get rid of the various blockages that have prevented you from making progress over the past few weeks. Death and the Chariot symbolize a glorious new beginning for your business affairs, after a period of stagnation. And that's really what you need in order to get back on course. Your professional goals are within reach, you just need a little extra incentive.

Back home, back happy . . .

Sorry, lovelies.
I know I've been away.
I've been healing.
Can we just leave it at that?
Bad news has led to no inspiration to post.

But!
I was just back in Chicago for a week
and it has totally recharged my battery.
Family, Friends and an abundance of hotdogs seems to have solved my problems.
Hopefully, I won't be so neglectful again.

This was my favorite part of the trip.
Every year the paternal side of my extended family gets together for Christmas.
That family has grown and grown and grown.
Now traditions we took part in as kids are being passed on to the next set of lucky dumplings.

I was standing next to my cute and crazy young cousin when Santa arrived.
(BTW - that's Husband - isn't he adorable)
She was the one who said,
"This never gets old for me."
I couldn't agree more.

I can remember exactly what it was like when Santa arrived at our doorstep.
Jumping up and down with all my cousins -
even when they all ready knew it was the neighbor from next door.
The smiles and joy on each parent, aunt, uncle and grandparents face.
It's as much a part of me as the hair on my head.

I'm so thankful when I look back at all the fantastic traditions my family had/have.
As an adult, I feel lucky and blessed to have been constantly surrounded by love and laughter.
It's all anyone can hope for, right?

As today is December 1st
I hope all of you embrace this Christmas season.
It really is the most wonderful time of the year.
And when it was my turn to sit on Santa's lap -
All I asked for was more of the same.
More love, more family, more friends.
(and yes - more hotdogs)

What? Huh? Tizzy did you know about THIS????

A SEQUIN sparkle sweatshirt from JCrew........How come I had to learn about this via another blogger. See Tizzy n Lish fans, Tizzy has an affiliation of sorts with Jcrew. And we both love and LIVE in what I refer to as sparkle sweatshirt (yes both of us could be found several times this week lounging around my apt in them). Now I see that Jcrew has stepped the sparkle up to a sequin. How do we not have this as another way of dressing up, our dressed down clothes? I love it I need. Nuf said.

A little Perspective

The Tizzster and I have had some set backs lately. But we are doing okay, and as always we will keep on keepin on. Cause really what other option is there? I saw this picture and I thought perfect for 2 reasons.

1) Because it's true.
and
2) Because I swear and so does this saying.

THIS is just ridiculous

Eva Longoria Parker this is just ridiculous. You are in your mid 30's. I don't care how great your body is, put some pants on.

I blame Madonna for this recent phenomenon. She started this actually about 2 years ago, when she started wearing leotards in her video's. Then beyonce, and shakira, and Lady Rhianna, and Lady Gaga follwed suit with the no pants thing. But these were all in video's or performance related things. Eva what's your excuse?

Oh Vera you have redeemed yourself.

I hated the last couple of seasons of Vera Wang bridal. Those long vertical ruffles, I thought they looked like a vagina. I can't imagine that anyone wants to look like a va-jay-jay on their wedding day. But Vera you are back with this lovely confection above. I ask you if you were getting married tomorrow would you REALLY not want to be in this????

This Winter I NEED

A wide brimmed fedora like the one pictured above to catch all the snow flakes, and keep them from falling on my hair. It will also work well next halloween if I decide to go as Indian Jones. See one hat two purposes.

Go America!!!

It's that time of year!
I don't care which way you vote.
I do care that you vote.
Too many people work too hard to allow you  the opportunity to cast a ballot.

The least you could do -
is a little bit of homework.
And cast a vote.

Hooray for . . .

I love this chic!
And today is her birthday.
Wish she was here and we were eating this together.
(Instead she's having a mani/pedi party and Lish is there)
((Can you tell I'm soooo jealous?!?!?!)

Her birth is one of the most significant events in my life.
I can remember every instant of that day.
How blessed I am to have to her.

Happy Birthday, girl!
Text me!

Lord, help me . .

Dear God,
Halloween is this week.
I mistakenly picked up my candy on saturday.
What was I thinking?
At this rate there will be nothing left for the children.
Please help me.
Grant me the strength to grab a handful of carrots  -
rather than the delicious chocolate I really want.
You're the best.
xoxo

Hmmmmm

Interesting concept. Not sure I believe that, I think if you have enemies that means you have probably done something wrong. But I can see how an outspoken, unapologetic public figure could feel that way.
